Hey there, friends! Today, we’re going to talk about something super fun and creative: using apple boxes in studio to make amazing portrait pictures! I recently decided to add some apple boxes in the Derek Giovanni Studio. Check out the video below to watch how to add apple boxes in your studio! ππ·
What Are Apple Boxes?
First things first, you might be wondering, “What are apple boxes?” Well, they’re not boxes made of real apples (yum!). These apple boxes are also not meant to pick real apples! Instead, studio quality apple boxes are wooden or plastic boxes that photographers use to make their pictures look awesome.
Why Use Apple Boxes?
Now, let’s chat about why photographers love using these boxes in studio. Apple boxes can help:
- Change Height: Sometimes, the person you’re taking a picture of is taller or shorter than you want. Apple boxes can make them stand higher or lower to get the perfect height.
- Make Sitting Comfy: If someone needs to sit during the photoshoot, apple boxes can make it comfy by giving them a little boost.
- Add Variety: You can stack these boxes to create different heights and angles in your pictures. It adds a lot of cool variety to your portraits!
How to Use Apple Boxes for Portraits:
Okay, now that we know why they’re awesome, let’s learn how to use them:
- Stack Them: You can stack the boxes to make a little “step” for your model to stand on. Just be sure to stack them securely, so they don’t wobble.
- Sit or Lean: If your model wants to sit, you can place an apple box for them to sit on. If they want to lean on something, you can use an apple box as a support.
- Hide or Show: Sometimes, photographers even hide apple boxes under blankets or fabrics to change the shape of the background or make it look interesting.
- Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try different combinations of stacking and arranging. That’s how you’ll discover cool new ways to use apple boxes in your photos!
Paint or Stain the Apple Boxes:
You may want to consider painting or staining your boxes. Darker stained apple boxes will blend in with your scene better. Our eyes will always gravitate toward the brightest part of an image. Thus, apple boxes should be darker than your subject. This will help your subject stand out in the scene. In my video, I show how I stained my apple boxes for this purpose.
Safety First:
Remember, safety is super important! Make sure the boxes are stable and won’t tip over. If someone is sitting on them, they should be comfortable and secure.
Have Fun!
The most important thing is to have fun and be creative. Apple boxes are like magical tools that can help you create awesome portrait pictures. So, grab your camera, your apple boxes, and start making beautiful photos that tell amazing stories! πΈβ¨
That’s it for today’s blog, friends. Now, go out there and have a blast taking portrait photos with your trusty apple boxes!
